Agnes (Cahoj) Sabatka, 97, of Atwood, departed this life on June 13, 2024, at Prairie Senior Living Center, Colby, KK. She was born October 4, 1926, on the family farm northeast of Beardsley, KS to Joseph J. and Mary (Dvorak) Cahoj. Her school years were spent north of her farm home at Prairie View, District 40, for her first five years, then McDonald Grade and High School. Agnes attended Notre Dame Academy in Omaha, NE for her senior year and graduated in May of 1944.
Following High School, Agnes went to Littleton, CO to work in a war plant making fuse heads for shells. After the war she worked in a department store in Atwood, KS. She then taught at Prairie View, District 40, for three yrs.
On September 12, 1949, she married Raphael J. Sabatka Sr. and to this marriage four sons were born: Brian, R.J., Craig, and Vaughn. In the early 1960’s Agnes was the farm baseball coach as she organized a team for young farm boys living in the area. They built a baseball field on the Sabatka farmyard and played nearby town teams. She was strong in the Catholic faith and a very hard worker tending to 3000 chickens, hogs, cattle, helping Raphael with farmwork, gardening, canning, baking and above all loving her family.
Preceding her in death were husband Raphael; parents Joe and Mary; siblings, Emmery, William, Leonard, Edward, Henry and Henrietta and daughter-in-law Diana Sabatka.
Those remaining to celebrate her memory include her sons, Brian (Connie) of McDonald, KS, R.J. (Susie) of Beardsley, KS, Craig (Kristi) of Atwood, KS and Vaughn (Tammy) of Beardsley, KS; sisters, Cecilia Allen of Colby, KS, MaryAnn Reinert, Greeley, CO and Carmelita (Dave) Berndt, Minneapolis, KS; 8 grandchildren; 23 great grand-children; 5 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A visitation will take place from 5-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., with a Rosary at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at St. John Nepoumcene Catholic Church, Beardsley, KS, with burial in the church cemetery.
