Ada Lee Bowles Cox of Atwood passed away February 11, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society Center of Atwood.
Ada Lee was born June 21, 1927 in Atwood the 4th child of James A. and Metha J. (Buck) Bowles. Her parents, three brothers, Lyle, Jimmy, Buddy, two sisters, Betty, and Marcella preceded her in death.
She spent her growing up years playing with cousins in Atwood and also in Formosa, KS where her dad’s family came from. During World War II, Ada Lee graduated from Atwood High School in 1945 and attended college in Boulder, CO. She returned home to the Atwood area and taught two years in the Bower and Union schools in Rawlins County.
Following the war, Ada Lee married J.B. Cox who had also grown up in the Atwood area. They were married in the Atwood Methodist Church on August 10, 1947. Three children were born to this union, Cindy, Craig, and Joe.
Ada Lee enjoyed being a farm wife and mother. She loved going to all the school activities of her children and watching all kinds of sports. She was community leader of the Chardon 4-H Club for several years. She enjoyed playing golf and spent many days playing at the Atwood Country Club and various tournaments in the area. She and J.B. played on many courses through the years. She belonged to several bridge clubs in Atwood and relished winning high prize many times. She also enjoyed playing the piano and spent several years playing for the Radiant Chapter of Eastern Star for which she was also Worthy Matron. One of her favorite pastimes was quilting and she was an excellent hand-quilter. Ada Lee was an active member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She taught Sunday School many years and was past president of UMW. She attended many bible studies and was dedicated to knowing more about the bible and growing in her Christian faith.
Ada Lee is survived by her loving husband, their three children, son-in-law, Jim Imel, Bucklin, KS, daughter-in-law, Diane Montgomery Cox, McDonald, three grandsons, Matt, Clint, Wes, and their wives, six great grandchildren, three step grand sons, Jeff, Mark, Brad, and their wives, eight step great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Ada Fae Bell, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the United Methodist Church, Atwood. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of Baalmann Mortuary, 109 N 2nd St, Atwood, KS 67730. Online condolences: www.baalmannmortuary.com
