Obituary for Leon A Brethower

Leon Brethower, 88, formerly of Bird City, died Friday, October 12, 2018, at his current home in Colby. He was born July 31, 1930, in Max, Nebraska, to Howard and Girda (Woolard) Brethower. He graduated from Bird City High School in 1948. On September 2, 1951, he married Shirley Kite.

Leon served in the U.S. Army, 18 months in Salzburg, Austria, discharged in September, 1953. He began his farming career in 1954, receiving a Conservation Award in 1960. He was active in his community, serving on the Cheyenne County Hospital Board for two terms, and the local Rural Electric board for one term. He served on numerous committees in the United Methodist Church and team taught a Sunday school class. He also served on the National Farmers Organization National Board of Directors for 15 years.

Leon is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Colby; children Janice (Frank), of Aloha, Oregon, Marlin (Jean) of Yamhill, Oregon, and Phil (Michele), of Castle Rock, Colorado; three grandchildren, Morgan, Ryan, and Cristin; brothers Dean (Lorraine) of Buffalo, Missouri and Dale (Karolyn) of Tucson, Arizona; and a niece and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, Ardith Ann, and faithful canine companion Mac.

It has been said society improves when people plant trees, in the shade of which they may never sit. Leon planted trees for over 60 years, in windbreaks, parks, and yards. Please honor him by planting a tree. No services are planned at this time. Baalmann Mortuary, Colby, is handling arrangements. For information or condolences, visit www.baalmannmortuary.com
